Fitness Can Be Fun?

Hey all, I haven't really been in the blogging mood as of late. Just didn't have that bloggy feeling, I'm sure you understand. I finally felt like writing today about something I'm happy about.

So I recently joined the gym and it's been really good. I'm going to Zumba twice a week and Aerobics twice as well as some weights and strength training. Zumba is the most fun and the class I look forward to the most. I just started 2 weeks ago, I still feel sore after most of the strength/weight days. How long does that last?

Mostly I want to feel better and not be so out of breath coming up to my apartment (3 floors up). I'll never forget once, I got a call from my brother just as I got up to my floor and he was like, "should I call you back later? You sound like Stevie from Malcom In The Middle". I'm not on too strict of a diet because I suck at diets. I'm just trying to eat better, make better food choices.

My class is half Egyptian women and half foreign women, the instructor is a lovely Hungarian woman who really knows how to get you to feel happy about exercising. That's a feat in and of itself. She measured us on various parts of the body at the start of the month and we'll get measured again once the month is up. I've lost about 7 pounds so far but the tape measure will really be the difference.

Anyone else on a fitness kick? I'm hoping to keep this motivation going.

  1. Oh Mona, I'm so happy you're doing better and that your finding exercise to be fun. I bought the Zumba DVDs and do them at home along with 30 day shred, biggest looser, and leslie sansone's walk like a runner dvd.

I remember being so winded walking up stairs. That's when it hit me that something had to change.

Keep at it. It will get easier. I know from experience.

    2. Yeah for real. There's a woman's gym here with a play room for kids but they have to be old enough to care for themselves since there's no dedicated supervision. Still, it's better than nothing and if I only had Nora that would be just perfect. She would be happy to wait for me in that room while I worked out!

  3. heyyyy!! Yes, I've been trying too inshaAllah. So far we have mostly made big health choices like buying ridiculous amounts of fruits and veges instead of potato chips and cookies :-P

I want to find some exercises I can do in the house since there aren't really any women-only classes/gyms here. I was planning on putting some posts up on my blog about it soon inshaAllah so I will be looking forward to hearing your updates as well!

    1. Yes, there's a fruit stand downstairs so that helps. My biggest thing is sweets so I have to curb that somehow but still treating myself for something great that's worth the calories sometimes.

    2. I found a recipe that totally satisfies my chocolate craving mashaAllah, its a kind of brownie with no egg or oil. its made with apple sauce, banana, and zucchini. its sooooo good, sort of like a very chocolaty banana bread brownie thing lol. InshaAllah I will post about it and send you the link.

also if I ever crave non-chocolate candy, fruit leather usually hits the spot. its like fruit roll ups, you know? but without the preservatives and high fructose corn syrup and junk. I think in the ME, its easier to find the apricot ones but i really like strawberry :-)

  4. Thats awesome that you have lost weight mashallah! I have never had a weight problem til this last year or so, and I HATED going to the gym, now after roughly 6 months Im actually loving it. I love seeing the changes in my body, and it makes me feel strong which is an awesome feeling. I totes agree on the diet thing, never diet it always makes u binge when u deny yourself something. I eat everything still, at the end of the day its about moderation like everyrthing in life being in the middle is the best way to live! That and better food choices, less processed foods, Keep up the good work!

  5. that's such great news Mona, I'm so happy you are feeling better and enjoying yourself... I personally got bored of the mundane gym equipment cardio, so I invested in some Shaun T workout videos myself, and they are fun... just as fun as zumba can be! I love zumba too. It's fun activities like this that keep us motivated. I think it is better that you are not dieting. Making small changes in your food will be so much better, and add exercise onto that... you are bound to get healthier and drop some pounds. 7 pounds is a remarkable loss in such a short time. Well done, and I hope you are feeling better. xoxo

  7. That's great that you're enjoying it! I need to start doing something again, I can tell I'm getting out of shape and I've been getting out of breath when walking up stairs and I didn't used to. I also suck at diets, so like you I'm trying to make better choices when it comes to food, not doing anything drastic.
Does zumba have different levels of intensity? I thought of trying that but I wasn't sure if I would be able to keep up with it. I bought a pilates beginners workout dvd and I couldn't even do half of it and it was really hard...

    1. Yea, our class isn't super intense because there's a few bigger girls like me but it's amazing how fast you get better and have more stamina. Good luck!

  8. Awesome! glad to hear you're taking care of YOU! AND enjoying it :) It's so hard to find something that will keep you going :) I am on fitness kick myself and will hopefully get some time to blog about it in the near future. Not too much difference on the scales, but I know my clothes don't fit the same way anymore so I'm happy :) I'm not on a strict diet either...I was for the first 5 days, but that was it...
