Man's Best Friend

Over the years I've become more and more of a dog person. I stop and pet strays and get happy when I see a pack of them. Unfortunately, living in an apartment, having a dog is out of the question. I hope one day soon, we'll have a place with a yard/garden so we can have a dog of our own.  I often accost kids with their dogs at the promenade to play with them for even a minute.

Safiyah with a sweet stray we met.

My very first dog memory was of when I was about 5, my dad and siblings and I were walking to a near by lake to go swimming when all of the sudden a dog started running at me. I freaked and made a b-line for the lake, I thought I'd run into the lake and he'd stop. Wrong. he ran right in after me. He just wanted to play, lol.

My favorite breed is golden retriever but I'd love to take in a mutt, a rescued stray. I feel like dogs love you unconditionally and are loyal forever. They don't care about anything, they just want your love and attention and in return you get a true friend, companion and playmate. Animals are better than humans every day of the week.

Do any of you have or have had a dog? What kind?

  1. I have never had a dog or really ever been a dog person. I prefer cats. I am growing to like dogs though and sometimes I wonder what it would be like to have one as a pet. My husband is frightened of them though as he was bitten several times as a child by strays. I love golden retrievers as well. My uncle used to have one called Toby and he was so gentle and sweet.
I also like spaniels for their lovely floppy ears and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are also cute (by best friend has had several over the years)

    1. I love cats too. I seems to have become allergic but I still think about getting one and putting up with it. Spaniels are so adorable.

    2. Yeah, I'm allergic to our new cat Mallaidh. :-( As I said to a friend, she's lucky that we fell in love with her at first sight, & that I already take allergy meds!

  2. We have two dogs. Our 5-year-old, 40-lb Poe is 1/2 Australian Shepherd, 1/4 Chow Chow, & 1/4 Pomeranian. Our 1.5-year-old, 16-lb Pip is 1/2 Jack Russell & 1/2 Pomeranian. We got them both as puppies from family/friends whose dogs had puppies. The girls at the vet say that Pip is Poe's mini-me. :-)

I'd never really had a furry pet before we got them, plus we just got a cat, so I've had a lot to learn & a lots of love to give. :-)

    1. Wow, they are so beautiful, although I'm partial to bigger dogs as opposed to little ones.

Growing up we always had dogs. One of the best dogs I ever shared my life with was a Hungarian Vizsla, she was as smart as she was beautiful. She was just a wonderful dog and I miss her to this day...

I am also partial to mutts, I have found that they are just great dogs.

  4. We don't have a dog, my daughter and husband are extremely allergic. But if I could get one, I would want a Newfoundland, they're huge and gentle and smart. Aww...but need a drool bib!

Inshallah you'll get a place with a yard soon!

NEVER had a 4-legged friend as a pet (had fish, birds and rabbits) until hubby came home with a 6 week old puppy, whom the girls named, Buddy. He has gotten so big already, but is still. He has great demeanor and is just kind and gentle, but very playful. We love him and adore him - especially now that he's not so nippy/nibbly with us...the girls' toys, that's a different story - some of them are getting royally chewed up to the point where stuffing is coming out.

Anyway, he's a pure bred Fox Red Labrador Retriever...

PS - I could never pet a stray dog...I was actually kind of scared of dogs until now...You are brave!

  6. I love pets to, I do have a cat and a couple of rabbits and I may be getting a dog soon.
