Hijab Fashion Magazine Again

Wednesday, March 16, 2011

I picked up this magazine and figured it would be great fodder for the blog. See how much I love you guys? Much to my shagrin, most of the stuff in there wasn't nearly as ugly as the last time. It comes in plastic so I went by the cover which is awful but here's a few bad ideas and some nice ones.

Now, I know Yay Egypt and all and yes, we are free but that doesn't mean you are free to desecrate the flag in this way! Really lady? Crinkle flag top? I saw the cover and thought, ok they're making a magazine cover, it's not an honest fashion suggestion. UNTIL...

These are actual suggestions on how to incorporate the Egyptian flag in your outfit. Wrap it about yourself in such a way that says I AM EGYPT!

I think it's lame, ugly and kinda disrespectful, but hey, It might work for a rally or something?

Now for the not so bad. It seems to me, for my taste, the abayas that are actually wearable are great except for one thing that has to ruin it. One design element too many. Like this one below, its cute but I'd like it better without the dangly beads. Easily fixable though.

This one, I like a lot. The color is nice, the shape is good and I like the beading. I just don't care for the mesh part in the middle. I'm more of a simple style girl.

This one would be nice without that weird flap/fold thing on the bottom. Take that part off and I'd totally like this.

Designers, know when to stop. Citizens of Egypt, wearing red, white and black is cool, wearing a shirt with the Egyptian flag on it is cool, wearing the actual flag is not.

  1. 'WRAP IT AROUND YOURSELF IN A WAY THAT SAYS I AM EGYPT!' lolll hahahaha.. i can sense i new explosion of egyptian pride that has been supressed for some time and now its just coming out and there not holding back are they? Masha'Allah. its nicee.. oh i love those abayas, there just so cute except I'd remove some random material in the middle of abaya.. I am a very simple dresser as well but egyptians dont do simple. If you tell them you like simple they will just look at you like with a confuzed look with questions lurking behind their eyes.

  2. HAHA I saw that magasine in the shop and chuckled a little to myself. I didn't realise what it looked like inside!

    She looks completely ridiculous!!!!

  3. This reminds me of my own fashion faux-pas. One 4th of July I decided to wear a thin cotton dupatta that was red, white and blue. (I actually bought it in India.)

I wrapped it as my hijab and wore a bright blue abaya. I looked... interesting. To say the least. Plus seems most of my fellow Americans didn't like the fact that I had those colors around my head. Although no one seemed to worry about the woman with the flag emblazoned across her rear end! LOL

Thanks for the photos, I liked the last abaya as well...

  5. that was entertaining :-) the flag belongs on a mast. Wearing flag colors is ok, but the real thing, no no

  6. Sarah Bint Muhammad, Yea, I mean some people dress simple but chic but most like a lot of things going on.

Amalia, I actually saw the cover on 2hijab.com then picked it up when I saw it out.

Umm Aaminah, Maybe they were just curious? Lets hope.

    Ange, Indeed. Overkill.

Jessyz, lol yes, on a mast! Or your car or balcony here.

  7. Wow this is a very patriotic issue haha. My Arabic must be getting better 'cos I can understand everything. Either that or it's written really simply. The pink and brown ensemble is cute!

  8. Jaz, that's good. I still don't automatically read Arabic, I have to intend to read it, know what I mean?

  9. Congrats on the vote Mona!

I agree that a state's flag on clothing isn't always done very appropriately. I can see for a special rally wrapping it around might be ok, or using the colors if cool - but plastering it across your rear or some giant gaudy accessory is disrespectful.

It isn't supposed to be clothing but a symbol of your heritage, freedom and country! That isn't something anyone should take lightly. Being proud also means being respectful of all that your flag represents.

Howeve, I would totally be willing to give it a pass right now, with the welling up of pride and success, but might not want to participate in that particular manner either, in your place. It is something to be very very proud of and you can't blame people too much!

I know I come from a particular kind of family, but if I had ever worn something made of a flag that touched the ground, had plastered it on my rear or used it in some other disrespectful manner, my family would have been VERY upset. In fact I just found the flag that was draped over my grandfather's casket, and was guilty because it was not stored properly! ;)

  10. Hi Mona, I just stumbled across your blog and have to say I love it! I am in the process of marrying an Egyptian and some of the bits in your blog had me in stiches. Love the Egyptian flag fashion haha, it reminded me of when Mubarak stepped down and myself and B were in an area of Muscat where a lot of Egyptians live. We were all waving flags around and shouting and partying, then I bumped into some women who had the flag on like a cape or over the hijab as a sort of veil. Anyway, thanks for making me laugh at that memory :) OB x
