British singer/rapper M.I.A showed up to the 2010 Scream Awards in the niqab ensemble above, yesterday and left most people scratching your head. She didn't comment on the significance of her attire but I, for one think she's awesome for it.I'm going to take it as a commentary on niqab being banned in many places. She later changed for a performance. She's always been outspoken and a bit controversial. What do you think? What was she trying to say here?
I dunno but that's a pretty cool abaya.
ReplyDeleteEmmm interesting. it must be because of the niqab ban in france

I think it's cool of her. Definitely a statement that a woman should be free to make the decision on what she wears.
ReplyDeleteHer father was one of the founding members of the Tamil Tigers who have obviously committed terrorist attacks against muslims, and she has voiced support for them. She says if her views make her a terrorist, then so be it (she's desperate to be 'alternative').
ReplyDeleteTo be honest I don't know whether I should be offended or not. Hm, in my opinion I would wonder why would somebody other than a Muslim want to wear a Niqab/Abaya for any other reason but Islamic purposes. Thats when I would wonder if they are mocking it or not. I think she should have stated her reason for doing so, it leaves me scratching my head foreal.
ReplyDeleteI too think she's commenting on the niqab bans and means no offense. I don't see how it's offensive at all.
ReplyDeleteHmm! Since I don't know her, I can't imagine her reasons to wear the Niqab. It would be nice if she explained her reasons, to settle our curiosity.
ReplyDeletehmmmmm, cool. but I'm not wearing sth like that, lol
ReplyDeleteThe more I think of it, the more it's obvious she's in support of niqab. Like how there's hijab day where women wear hijab in support of Muslim women. Solidarity man. I think the design has some references to her album or single or something so it's not a totally selfless act, but she's got people talking for sure.
ReplyDeleteHm, before I start I adore the new layout XD. lol I don't know exactly how to explain my reasoning and i dunnoe if you'll get the example I will give you :P it would be like wearing a cross necklace just because I can, without having any "meaning" behind it. While to somebody else this cross necklace holds a great significance, sort of like how I hold women who wear the niqab with significance (I think they are so brave wearing it) So when I see something like this picture I would be like "....... (-_-)"
ReplyDeletePerfectlyImperfect, I see what you're saying. I'm going on the assumption, and it is just that, an assumption that she didn't wear it for fashion or for no reason, but in support of niqab in the face of adversity in France and other places.
ReplyDeletePerfectlyImperfect, Oh yea, and thanks! It's quite girly isn't it?
ReplyDeleteIs this supposed to be Niqab? I'm quiet offended because first of all this isnt how Niqab is worn, second of all, Niqab shouldn't be used to make a statement. I wonder how would muslims react if she was wearing Hijab and a mini skirt? It would be offensive because the two are the exact oppisates, here she is wearing Niqab with nine-inch heels, make up and a loud screaming print.
ReplyDeleteIf she wanted to support Niqab then theres ways of giving her support as well as respecting it.
If there was a ban on nun's clothes, I would not support it by wearing a Nun's clothes at the same time wearing High Heals and prints all over - its insulting to those who wear it.
Slave2Allah, she isn't obligated to wear it correctly, but she wanted to make a statement. I wouldn't be offended by a hijab and mini, everyone's free to wear what they want. I guess everyone has a different way of looking at it.
ReplyDeleteI hope so! Oh and yes it's really really cute, don't change it :) I love it !
ReplyDeleteLooovvee your new layout, Mona!! It's so pretty! You're so talented mashaAllah. I want a new one now =( =(
ReplyDeleteI think MIA is trying to say that there's no harm in a woman who WANTS to wear niqab. It's almost like she's saying, "Who's gonna stop me ???"
Shahirah Elaiza, I love it too, but I can't take credit. I went with a ready made template this time. http://www.nymfont.com/ has some really pretty and cute free templates :)
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, MIA was making a point.
Slave2Allah, I hate to break this to you, but there are tons of Muslims who wear the Niqab in a similar way--with makeup, high heels, and the like. When I lived in Kuwait, I was shocked at how much eye makeup most of the Niqabis wore. I mean, they must have needed power tools to remove that stuff every night! It kind of cheapens their "sacrifice" to Allah when they walk around with eyes painted up like Broadway stage makeup and 6-inch stilettos. But then, only Allah can judge their true intentions and their hearts. Allah knows best. I think MIA did this primarily as a publicity stunt, and it seems to have worked for her because lots of people are talking about her. If it happens to get people talking about the hijab/niqab bans in various countries, I suppose that's a positive side-effect.
