Abaya Review

Friday, September 24, 2010

When I learned that on-line Islamic clothing store, 2hijab.com was based in Egypt, I was really excited to be able to shop on-line and get a new abaya. Right away I loved the one below. It's called Thuraya and I liked the simplicity, the sleeves and the color. It also comes in black, navy, brown, grey and olive green, but I chose the burgundy.

I exchanged a few emails with them and they were very prompt and let me know that they did in fact, ship to Hurghada and that they would give me a lower price in Egyptian pounds I called to get a price and they quoted 250LE which is about 40LE less than the dollar price listed. I asked roughly how much shipping would be and they said about 10-20 LE. I was stoked and took my measurements, send them in, and made my order. They said it would take 10 days as the abayas are made to order. They called me once the abaya was done and told me that I'd receive an email to make the payment. When I read the email I was shocked to see that shipping was 70 LE. I called them and they said it was out of their hands and that the shipping company, Aramex gave that price. I decided it was too much and they told me I could have it sent to someone I know in Cairo. My neighbor was in Cairo at the time and they sent it to her. She only came back this week so I finally got my abaya about a month after placing the order. This isn't 2hijabs fault, in fact they didn't charge me to deliver it to my friend's house but I gave her 260LE cash to pay for the abaya and for their driver's trouble.

When I got my hands on the abaya, I immediately saw that it was a much darker color than on the site. I know sometimes lights and computer screens can differ but this was a drastic difference. The fit is good except that the empire waist rides up a little sometimes. Also the ties in the back are barely long enough to tie and not long enough to make a bow. The fabric is nice and it's a well made garment.

I don't hate the color but I really would have liked if it was the color shown just because this burgandy is so dark it's almost dark brown, and I already have a brown abaya with similar sleeves. I didn't think it was worth the hassle of a return or anything and I'm satisfied with the abaya in general so it's a keeper.

And on me.

Closer pic of the color with flash.
All in all, I'd rate my experience with 2hijab.com a 7.5 out of 10. The color is kind of a big deal but otherwise they were accommodating, easy to contact and sold me a quality product for a decent price.

  1. Salaam sis. You know, I've eyed that company since 2006, when I first converted!!! They have so much stuff now masha'allah; I've really wanted to order something but there is always that fear...

Insha'allah next time I find myself salivating over one of their abaya I'll give them a try (if the shipping overseas doesn't break the bank!).

    Glad you are enjoying it!

  3. Oh Mona, this abaya is very nice. It's the kind I'd feel like wearing, too. But,yes I'm sorry about the color.Sometimes it happens!I,for example, ordered last week a very nice cardigan from a catalogue and though the fit is perfect and I really like the model, the color just isn't the same as in the picture in the catalogue. The cardigan had to be in the same color as your abaya, but it's much darker :/.Anyway!
    I send you a hug :)!

  7. I've always wanted to order from them. They've got some really cute things on their site, but the shipping to the states is horrendous. Way more than some of the other companies out there.

  8. Stephanie, I never looked at how much shipping was to the US, I bet it might be worth a try if you know someone else near you who wants to order something and then split shipping.
