Hijab Fashion Magazine, And I Use The Word Fashion Loosely

Wednesday, May 5, 2010

Yesterday as we passed a news stand and Dawood was buying a Mickey comic, I spotted a Hijab magazine and I love magazines, so I got it. It was in plastic so I couldn't look inside but I thought, how bad could it be? So, later as I'm flipping through it, I find what can only be described as a glossy parade of some of the ugliest ensembles I've ever had the misfortune to witness. 85% of this stuff was just unwearabe-ly fug.

I should say that I rarely see such offenses out and about so this absolutely doesn't represent the majority of the Egyptian population. Just my opinion, so don't anyone go and get offended.

What the hell is going on here? What is that?!
Is the circus in town? And what's with this one hijab wrap that they all have going on in all the pictures? It pretty much looks like a fabric hairstyle and it looks really hot. Since the way they have it wrapped doesn't cover the neck they all have turtlenecks on under their hideous get-ups. Yea, that's just great for hijabi women, in the Middle East. In Summer.
This one seems to have taken the Fraulein Maria route and fashioned her abaya out of curtains. And and old couch.
Really? Denim vest? She's also got that big cowboy belt buckle on to really drive point home: "Look at me! I'm western!"

Now even the model in this one looks disgusted. Crushed velvet over satin pants?

Brides are also a big part of this magazine. Advertisements for make-up artists and "veil designers" are aplenty.

The Arab obsession of being extra white is in full force on a girl's wedding day. Clown-white foundation is caked on in a most ridiculous amount.

I tend to think a more natural look is flattering, more like the one on the lower left here. The head piece on the bottom right appears to be made of bedazzled sea urchins
I'll be damned if that doesn't look like a tranny. She bears a striking resemblance to Sean Wayans in White Chicks.

Now for the not-so-bad.

The Polyvore-like ensembles here are mostly ok.

There are some outfits here that just go a little too far and would be ok if they made a small change.

Take this lass for example. That cropped denim jacket has no place in this outfit and she should have more casual shoes.

Another near miss on this one here. The weird sleeves are too much. Bad shoes and hijab, I say but chin up, girly, you were close.

This, here is cute. Not a fan of that hijab style, but otherwise, cute. Why do all that and have on a turtleneck in this heat when you can wrap your scarf like a normal person and have some air circulating and I don't know, not die of a heat stroke.

This one is almost something I would wear. Not crazy about he patchwork and maybe in a different color.

At least the magazine was good for a laugh and make-fun-ablity, but I won't be wasting any money on this publication again. What do you think of these, erm....costumes?

  2. It is SO hard to find a good fashion magazine for hijabis! SO HARD. Hence I scour websites and blogs.

But a proper magazine would be nice..

  3. Is the circus in town?

    Snort!

Love the commentary. Those first few were just awful. The pink sweater and skirt is a cute outfit.

  4. Those are awful, what were they thinking??

  5. This post really made me laugh! I do wish someone would come up with a hijab friendly line that was bearable in the heat. Where I'm at it's common to get over 100 F in the summer and oh so humid. I usually put on an abaya with very little underneath.

  6. Hegab is always good for a laugh. Some of their abayat are decent, but the past 2 years or so have been ridiculous (as you've seen.) What's funny is to see it out on the town...My husband and I used to have a good snort when we saw the "uber-fashionable" (read fashion disasters) on the streets. Not to be mean or anything, but some of them were way too over the top and some of the drag queens I used to know would love their outfits.

  9. How much are the magazines? I want to collect some next time I'm in Egypt just for the pics and to give to friends, even though they're totally over the top I still love to look at them! The pink one IS cute, even with the turtle neck I think.

  10. You know how those Reality TV shows about fashion go on the street and pick at people's outfits: what goes, what doesn't, what the person did right, what they did wrong, etc? Well, wouldn't you love the opportunity to do that for women in hijab? That would be a dream come true for me!

Also, living in the MidEast, it was very surprising for me how little hijab-friendly the stores are!!!! It is very difficult to find a piece of clothing that is not 3/4 sleeve length or wide-legged pants. But the pictures in the magazine you bought...hideous! Who put those outfits together? A professional fashion designer who does not know the rules of wearing hijab properly? Also, since its a 'hijab' magazine...why don't they have different styles/ways to wear the hijab (scarf) itself? Why are they all the same?????
Anyways, thanks Mona for sharing...I loved your thoughts about the outfits, too funny.

  11. Haha, you made me laugh... yes these are not practical at all.. how the heck they got into the mag in the first place... when I was in Dubai I was in awe at the ladies dresses at the hotel and malls, they were modest, trendy and expensive looking, nothing of these sorts... I would not wear anything in that mag or you know when you go out in town, you see these hijabis in short skirts and with leggings under that, I always thought to myself, " why bother darling.."

  12. Shahira Elaiza, Yea for now blogs will do :)

    Khadra, Thanks. Yea it is.

    Melissa, they obviously were not.

Stephanie, I know, it's so impractical! In the summer I like a loose cotton/linen abaya.

NoortheNinjabi, So I hear, The bad thing is I was sitting with a group of Egyptian women this morning and they were all going crazy over these very styles! I didn't have the heart to share my opinions on the ugliness when one of them has placed an order for 2 items in there. I just said something about the turtlenecks in summer.

    [[[xSmileyx]]] It's weird indeed!

Jessyz, heh, sorry, I hope it was enjoyable.

Jaz, this one was 16 LE.

Rana, Oh that would be the best! Yea the lack of nice, cool simple stuff is weird. It should be easier.

Stylomom, hahah! Why bother darling! I know, I'd rather they didnt give hijab a bad name.

  13. Wow, those are really ugly! No thanks! I'll wear a potato bag, before that stuff.

When my sister in law got married, they had make- artists come to our home and do our make-up. I looked like a transvestite! seriously. Not nice. My husbands face "when he saw me" was priceless. :)) Never again. Less is more.

  14. Salam Mona :o),

he,he :)...yeah the looks are pretty ugly :)!I'm sorry it's like that, because I know how exciting it can be when one buys a magazine and can't wait to get home and have a dedicated look at it.I always, always wanted to buy a hijab magazine, but there aren't such ones in Slovenia and Italy.Maybe there are other publications you could try and see.
I send you a hug my dear :)!

  15. Asalaamu Alaikum :)

Thanks for sharing those pics! In my husband's home country, I've seen some disasters like those...My first thought is "hmm that's interesting" my second though is "Man its like 115 degrees out here, you must be DYING in all that crap!"

It kind of goes along with the whole, "I'll wear like 10 layers of western clothing to be considered modern, even in the summer."

  16. I hate the hair look for hijab. A scarf should look like a scarf, not like hair! A lot of these outfits would be GREATLY improved with a decent headscarf wrap!

  17. Am i the only one loving these looks? I dont reccomend these looks for people who want to dress modestly but other than that I think the stylist did a great job putting these outfits together. I love All of them, even the brides look gorgeous. I think the girls look beautiful but that doesnt mean its halal!... :D

  18. Texan in UAE, that's hilarious!

Jasmina, thanks, I don't know how many there are or what but I'll be on the look out.

*JetLagged* Yea, weather should be a factor! That's exactly the thinking.

    Candice, yea absolutely.

    Sara, I can't tell if you're being sarcastic. :/

  19. ROFL!

You are HILARIOUS! OMG. I could have written the same reactions to all of them! "Fabric hairstyles"?! YES! and in polyester too! OY!

The last dress is too funny...it seriously looks like she was trying to do a magic trick but dropped the deck of cards in her lap! LOL! OMG, what kinda drugs are these designers on?

And God help me, but the day I ever wear 4 hijabs at time! NO WAY!

  20. Sabiwabi, thanks, Yea I don't get wearing so much when it's hot, ugh it's stupid.

  21. This is an interesting post, cuz I like elegant SIMPLE fashion.Sure not this freaking ugly one !! :))..
I know that magazine u r talking about ..It's simply AWFUL and surprisingly it's not cheap though IMHO it isn't worth a penny!!

I agree about what "Rana "said here that stores in Egypt aren't at all Hijab friendly..some women resolve that dilemma by wearing the ugly Carina body wear which i totally detest..Surprisingly when you shop for clothes abroad you find more decent stuff for Hijabis.A couple of months ago I was in UK and I really enjoyed shopping there..much more DECENT stuff..U can sum it up saying that here in Egypt they r not encouraging women to wear a hijab or they r kinda urging them to stay indoors cuz there they can wear all these elegant stuff they r missing as Hijabis..It's like "take it off to look more elegant"..the same way why Hijabis Egyptian Tv anchors don't exist..Again,It's like "Take it off and you can be an anchor if u wish".
Sadly what u don't like in this magazine is a "Wow"to many other Egyptian ladies..The majority of them lack the elegance..very few got it..Those are women who somehow enjoy high social and financial backgrounds ,though it's not a rule, some people got the money and are still so frumpy!!
For the make-up..Can't they understand that too much foundation clogs the pores!!.and who told them that "beauty is white"..I know blonds who are so far from being "beautiful"..!!

You tackled this issue so well..Thumbs up!! :)

  23. You have a great style of writing! I live in the Netherlands, some pictures shown in that magazine are here very normal to see. Over the top. I like it simple. And I really hate those caked-up make-updolls. They are sooo ugly with that amount of make-up! Make-up is suppossed to be brightening up you're good sides, but this is more like they put all make-up they had in their bags on their faces...

  24. salam.perhaps they should think of comfort & the purpose of wearing hijab before got too craze bout fashion.not only in mag but in real scenes too.

  26. I am an American Muslimah living in Egypt and sorry, Egyptians have poor taste! No classic and simple, everything de trop! I mean really crazy stuff! Instead of clean lines, eveything has to have applique, sequins, ruffles, etc. The trend is for LOTS of cheap looking plastic jewellery instead of one or two good pieces. I;d love to see some American halal designers.

  27. Asphoura, I hate to generalize but what you describe seems to be a popular trend among a lot of Egyptian women. That's not to say that I haven't seen some classy stylish women. I know some. Less is more ladies.
